Rug Care Guide

Natural wool care

Keep your Moroccan rug beautiful for years.

Our handmade Taznakht rugs are crafted from natural wool. With gentle, regular care, you can help preserve the rug's texture, colors and handmade character for many years.

Vacuum gently

Regular light vacuuming helps remove dust and surface dirt. Use gentle suction where possible and avoid aggressive rotating brushes that may pull on the wool or fringes.

Rotate your rug

Rotate your rug from time to time so that foot traffic and light exposure are distributed more evenly across the surface.

Protect from moisture

Natural wool should not remain wet for long periods. Keep your rug away from persistent moisture and allow it to dry thoroughly if it becomes damp.

Limit strong direct sunlight

Prolonged exposure to strong direct sunlight may gradually affect some colors. Rotating the rug and controlling strong sunlight can help maintain a more even appearance.

Natural wool needs gentle care.

Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, aggressive scrubbing and excessive soaking. When in doubt, use a professional rug cleaner experienced with handmade wool rugs.

Spills & accidents

What to do when something spills.

Acting quickly and gently is usually the best approach. Avoid rubbing the stain, as this can spread it deeper into the fibers.

  1. 01

    Blot

Use a clean, absorbent white cloth to gently blot as much liquid as possible. Do not aggressively rub or scrub the wool.

  2. 02

    Use minimal moisture

For minor spills, use only a small amount of clean water if needed. Avoid soaking the rug or flooding the affected area.

  3. 03

    Dry completely

Allow the area to dry completely with good air circulation. For difficult stains, contact a professional wool-rug cleaner.

Deep cleaning

Professional cleaning is the safest option.

Handmade wool rugs require different care from many synthetic carpets. For a full deep clean, we recommend choosing a professional cleaner who has experience with handmade wool and Moroccan rugs.

Tell the cleaner that your rug is handmade and made from natural wool before any treatment begins.

Fringes

Take extra care around the edges.

The fringes and handmade edges of a Moroccan rug can be more delicate than the main woven surface.

Avoid pulling loose threads and avoid repeatedly running a rotating vacuum brush over the fringes.

Furniture

Reduce pressure marks.

Heavy furniture can leave temporary impressions in natural wool. Where practical, move or slightly reposition furniture from time to time to distribute pressure.

Furniture pads may also help distribute weight on the rug.

Natural characteristics

Handmade means unique.

Small variations in weaving, texture, shape and pattern are normal characteristics of handmade Taznakht rugs.

Natural wool may also show subtle differences in texture across the rug. These details are part of the character of a handmade piece rather than the uniform appearance of a machine-made rug.

Storage

How to store your rug.

If you need to store your rug, make sure it is clean and completely dry first.

  • Roll the rug rather than sharply folding it where practical.
  • Keep it in a clean, dry and ventilated location.
  • Avoid storing it directly on a damp floor.
  • Protect it from prolonged moisture and pests.
  • Check the rug periodically during long-term storage.

What should you avoid?

Avoid bleach, strong stain removers, harsh detergents, aggressive scrubbing, pressure washing, machine washing and excessive soaking unless a qualified professional specifically confirms that the treatment is suitable for your rug.

Useful answers

Moroccan rug care questions

Can I vacuum my Taznakht rug?

Yes. Gentle vacuuming is a good way to remove normal dust and surface dirt. Use gentle suction and take extra care around handmade fringes and edges.

Can I wash my Moroccan rug in a washing machine?

We do not recommend machine washing a handmade natural-wool rug. Excessive water, agitation and unsuitable detergents may affect the wool, weave, shape or colors.

What should I do if I spill something on my rug?

Blot the spill gently with a clean absorbent cloth as soon as possible. Avoid rubbing. For difficult stains or large spills, consult a professional cleaner experienced with wool rugs.

Can I use regular carpet cleaner?

Not every carpet-cleaning product is suitable for handmade wool. Avoid harsh chemicals and test any appropriate treatment carefully, or ask a professional wool-rug cleaner for advice.

Is it normal for a handmade rug to have small variations?

Yes. Variations in weave, texture, pattern and shape are part of the handmade character of authentic Moroccan rugs.

How often should I professionally clean my rug?

There is no single schedule for every home. The need for deep cleaning depends on traffic, pets, spills, placement and general use. Professional cleaning is best considered when normal gentle maintenance is no longer sufficient.
